ETM LEARNING CURRICULUM

Representing Numbers with Five-Frames and Ten-Frames

Learners use five-frames and ten-frames to represent quantities from 0 to 10 and recognize how quantities relate to 5 and 10.

Mathematics

Grade K

Number Sense

YOUR LEARNING TARGET

Represent and interpret quantities using five-frames and ten-frames.

This is what you are working toward.

THE ETM BIG IDEA

When quantities are organized, we can see how numbers are built. Five-frames and ten-frames help us see a number in relation to 5 and 10.

LEARN

Build understanding

I can count counters and place them correctly on a five-frame or ten-frame with support.

BUILD MASTERY, STEP BY STEP

Learn • Trust • Thrive

Move from supported understanding to confident, independent application.

TRUST

Practice with confidence

I can independently represent and identify quantities from 0 to 10 using five-frames and ten-frames.

THRIVE

Apply it independently

I can recognize structured quantities without counting every counter, explain the quantity in relation to 5 or 10, and represent it in another way.

SUPPORT THE LEARNER

Parent & Educator Insight

A small shift in how we respond can strengthen both understanding and confidence.

Show a frame briefly and ask, “What did you notice?”

If the learner counts every counter, allow them to finish. Then model the structure: “I noticed a complete group of 5 and ___ more.” Ask whether they can see the quantity that way too.

The goal is to add a more efficient way of thinking—not take away a strategy that still works.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING STARTS WITH CLARITY

Not sure what skill should come next?

The ETM Academic Clarity Assessment identifies what a learner understands, where confidence breaks down, and which Mastery Guides provide the strongest next step.
